Ike's Views of Social Security
Thanks to Sam Smith for this flashback from the Great American Memory Hole:
Dwight Eisenhower wrote his brother Edgar on May 2, 1956: "Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again.... There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things. Among them are H.L. Hunt...a few other Texas oil millionaires, and an occasional politician or businessman from other areas. Their number is negligible and they are stupid."

Ran into this site by accident. The Eisenhower quote was great;says it all.
Here's another: LINK to more social security history.
It seems that Grandpa Prescott instilled in Georgie all the right-wing Roosevelt hatred of the 30s and 40s.One of Georgies's professors at Harvard Business School was amazed by the attitudes that Georgie evinced there in the mid-70s--seemed to him vintage Daddy Warbucks .
A friend, now deceased, grew up in the CCC camps and WWII. His favorite quip when when he saw a certain Republican in the post office of our small town at the first of the month was: "Cashing Roosevelt's check again, eh?"
For more Eisenhower quotes and thoughts, check out David Halberstam's The Fifties. This book can probably be purchsed at the used internet bookseller, Abe Books, for a couple bucks.
Enjoyed your site.
I'm a little skeptical that Ike's quote is legit. It seems to fit a little too well to the present day. What is your source for Ike's letter to his brother? Can you point me to a book that puts this letter into the context in which it was written?
Well done!
